Meditate on Love

It may sound clichéd, but meditating on love and kindness can be one of the most fulfilling meditation practices. During meditation, we learn to actively cultivate love towards others and ourselves. Most people are born kind and good. The development of the ego and pride, as they grow older, is what impedes them from accomplishing positive actions and thinking lovingly about others. Our mind and heart is burdened with emotions, many of which are negative emotions like an inflated sense of pride, which leads to other destructive emotions like jealousy, hatred and anger. All of us experience these emotions towards others at some point in life. Sometimes we have an inner insight and are aware that what we are experiencing is damaging to ourselves and others but most often we don’t have control over what we are feeling and helpless to stop ourselves. Meditating on love can change this.

Cultivating emotions

It may see odd to you to read this heading. How does one cultivate emotions? After all, we’ve heard often enough about emotions getting better of one self. Isn’t cultivating emotions akin to controlling them? And is that possible? Even in the language we use to talk about emotions, like ‘falling in love’ or being ‘overcome by hatred’, one can sense the lack of control. Can you cultivate love towards someone?

The answer is yes. Emotions can be fashioned to be what you want them to be. If you bring more awareness into your feelings you will be able to control them. And the way to do to that is to meditate on love. When you meditate on love you can advance and cultivate the positive emotions that you would like to experience, like love, kindness, forgiveness and actively deter negative emotions that create conflicts with you and feelings of dislike, jealousy and anger towards others.

The love can be directed towards the people who we know and whom we love and cherish, towards mankind in general and also towards ourselves. This meditative practice helps to bring more harmony in our relationships with others and with ourselves. Meditating on love will help to strengthen your bonds with your loved ones, help your resolve your conflicts with people, attain closure about your feelings for your adversaries and most importantly help you deal with any ego-conflicts you may have within yourself. It will help you to be more empathetic towards others and transform you into a kinder and more considerate human being. You will learn to appreciate the positive qualities of others and focus lesser and lesser on their faults. Moreover, when you direct love towards yourself, it will help resolve any internal conflicts that may exist and you will learn to appreciate yourself more.

Meditation technique

Sit in a quiet room, in a comfortable posture. Close your eyes. Now take your awareness towards your feelings and emotions. Control your awareness and don’t let your emotions and wandering mind distract you away form the purpose of the exercise. Feel your breath going in through your nostrils, hold it for a few second and then exhale. Once you have established steady, rhythmic breathing, take your attention to your inner eye and focus on the point between your eyebrows.

Now with every breath you take imagine that you are receiving love, store that love in your heart as you retain your breath; let it touch every cell in your being; visualize it reaching out to someone you would like to send love to; imagine their heart being filled with love, their body and soul being drenched in love; finally exhale the compassion and visualize it radiating to everyone in the universe. With greater practice you will actually be able to feel yourself pulsating with overwhelming love. Cherish this moment for there is no greater truth nor joy than love.

Just breathe

Anyone who has done mediation will be able to verify that it is definitely not as easy as it looks. To the onlooker it may seem like all you have to do is to close your eyes and think of nothing, which is easier said than done! But meditation involves much more than that. It involves getting centered and grounded, making your mind clear of all distractions, concentrating, whether it’s on a light source or a mantra (words), or a deity and finally calming and controlling your emotions and thoughts to connect deeply with the energies that surround us.

There are many ways to mediate, some easier than others, especially designed for beginners. What is essential to meditation is not the music, the incense or the clothes – it is the quiet, within and without, and of course the time and dedication one needs to have. There are specific skills one needs to develop and techniques one needs to master if you want to feel, with a degree of certainty, of the promise of meditation.

Simple breathing technique

One of the simplest methods of meditation is concentration on just simple breathing. It makes practitioners of their own respiratory system and breathing patterns. Given below are step-by-step directions for meditation using simple breathing.

Choose a quiet place to meditate and assume a comfortable position. The most common posture for meditation is sit cross-legged, with your hands resting on the knees, with palms facing up. This is also called the lotus position in yoga. The important thing is to keep the back straight and keep your mind from wandering or becoming lethargic.

Close your eyes partially or fully, and now focus your attention on your natural and spontaneous, rhythmic breathing. Breathe naturally, through the nostrils. Do not try and control the breathing. Try to develop total awareness of the rhythmic flow of the breath. This awareness is the objective of the meditation and we must try to concentrate on it to the exclusion of all else. Notice that the breath is cool as it enters the nostril and warm as it flows out. Observe this with the attitude of a detached witness.

At first your mind will be very busy and your thoughts might stray. Resist the temptation to follow these thoughts and try to remain single mindedly focused on the sensation of breathing. If your mind does wander, be aware of the fact and bring it back to your breath immediately. In the beginning this will probably happen every two to three seconds, but slowly, as you keep practicing you will be able to concentrate for longer and longer durations on your breath.

Gradually, once these incessant distracting thoughts have subsided, you will feel a sense of inner peace and contentment. Your mind will feel refreshed, unusually lucid and relaxed. Mediation then will not be an effort as it was in the beginning. A feeling of tranquility will permeate your thoughts and will carry on even after the meditative practice is over.

To end the mediation, bring awareness back by observing the physical body as one unit and then open your eyes.

Although this is a simple breathing technique, practitioners will vouch for its power to produce inner peace. This helps us to cope with the turmoil, busyness and difficulties of daily life. Most importantly, this feeling of contentment comes from within – no external conditions are necessary. Just this breathing mediation for ten to fifteen minutes each day is sure to reduce the levels of stress that we face each day.

Meditation finds its origins in the Eight Fold path of Astanga Yoga. According to this philosophy one has to achieve each of these stages, to reach a stage of super consciousness or liberation, which is the final aim of meditation. The eight limbs of yoga are:

Yama or self-restraint

Niyama or religious observances

Asana or posture

Pranayama which is restraint of breath

Pratyahara or control of the senses

Dharana or concentration

Dhyana or meditation

Samadhi or a super-conscious state or liberation

There are many different ways to mediate, which range from meditation on a light source to breathing to practicing different meditation asanas. One of the most common ways to meditate is to focus your attention on a deity, which is akin to meditating on perfect purity.

Techniques for meditation

Stage One:

When preparing yourselves to meditate on a deity, you must first purify your consciousness to the greatest extent possible. So sit is a comfortable posture in a quiet room (you could choose your prayer room is you have one). Using whatever technique that works for you the most effectively, attain a stage of alert, peaceful calm which pervades your mind, emotions and body. And get ready to concentrate upon and receive pure and holy energy. Think of your body as a vessel into which this divine light, power and consciousness will be poured into. Techniques one and two are useful for people who visualize their God in a human form. Technique three is more suited to someone who worships the divine in the form of light or an energy source.

Technique 1

In this technique, after you have reached stage of restful calmness, you will need to visualize your God, in whichever form you worship Him, as clearly as possible. Concentrate on visualizing His feet first. Be aware of ever little detail. Imagine that he is blessing the earth with his presence. Move on from the feet, upwards to His robes. Imagine Him calling out to you, beckoning you with His hands, reaching out to you to take all your suffering and pain, to be with you and to carry you to a peaceful and happy universe. Finally, see his benevolent face suffused with love, for you, and for every being in this world. This technique will help you interact with your deity.

Technique 2

The next technique is slight different in that you visualize yourself kneeling in front of Him, making an offering to Him. The offering could be anything – your love, your pain, your sorrow, or even a promise. See the deity accept it gracefully and fill your vessel with joyous love and soulful bliss. Watch Him as He takes pleasure in taking on your sorrow and easing your pain. Internalize the gratitude that you feel as He does this for you.

Technique 3

Imagine your deity filling you completely as if a tap has been opened, with you being the vessel underneath it. Then visualize him filling up someone else you know. See him as omniscient – in very being on earth, in each and every object. See him filling the entire universe, the entire solar system, each and every planet and every little star. Be aware that the source of energy that is Him is part of each and every thing in the planet, in the world, and is also in every minute cell of yours. You are one with Him. Feel His presence in you. For now and forever.
